Penbryn is a village on the coast of Ceredigion in Wales, some ten miles up the coast from Cardigan. It consists mostly of farms and caravan sites. Penbryn Beach is owned by the National Trust and was used for location filming for the James Bond film Die Another Day.
Near the village is the Corbalengi Stone, a monument of the Early Christian period inscribed: "CORBALENGI IACIT ORDOVS". "Ordovs" is generally agreed to be the local tribe the Ordovices but "Corbalengi" is not found elsewhere, and there are many theories as to the significance of the inscription.
The beautiful beach of Penbryn is situated 9 miles north of Cardigan on the Ceredigion coast in West Wales. Featured in the James Bond film, Die Another Day, the golden sands of this unspoilt mile-long beach and are now owned by the National Trust.
Penbryn is an ideal base for walkers wanting to explore the Ceredigion Coast Path which stretches southwards to Tresaith and northwards to Llangrannog. From the car park at Penbryn there is also a short woodland walk which takes you along the River Hoffnant to a small bridge and out onto the sands of Penbryn beach.
Historic highlights of Penbryn include an ancient monument dating back to the Early Christian period, known as the Corbalengi Stone, which can be found close to the village. The inscription on the stone reads ‘Corbalengi Iacit Ordovs’ and is linked to the Ordovices, a Celtic tribe living in Wales prior to the Roman invasion in AD77. In more recent times, the valley leading down to the beach, known as Cwm Lladron (Robber’s Valley), was a popular destination for illicit cargoes of wine, spirits, and tobacco from France and Ireland during the 18th century.
Parking is available for a small fee in the National Trust car park at Llanborth Farm, located approximately 400 metres inland from the beach. For disabled visitors there is a turning circle and drop off point at the end of the road leading down to the beach.
Public conveniences are located in the car park. A small shop and café can also be found next to the car park and are open during the summer season.
Dogs are only allowed on the beach between the months of October and April.
